Tips

history
From the Eastern Jin poet Tao Yuanming's 《饮酒·其五》: 结庐在人境,而无车马喧。问君何能尔?心远地自偏 (I built my hut in the human realm, yet no clatter of carts and horses. You ask how this is possible? When the mind is distant, the place becomes remote on its own). The paradox of inner seclusion within a populated place - one of the defining statements of the Chinese recluse ideal.
usage
车马喧 literally = 'carts-and-horses clamor,' a stock metaphor for the noise of officialdom and the fashionable world. Quoted as the second half of the couplet with 结庐在人境.
