隐居 has deep roots in Chinese culture. The tradition of the scholar-recluse (
隐士, yǐnshì) who retreats from corrupt politics to live in nature is a major theme in Chinese literature and philosophy, from Tao Yuanming (
陶渊明) to the hermits described in the Daodejing.
