12 Oct 2026 · Test build of the next version, installs next to p8nda
The app download is about 100 MB instead of 365 MB.
Running out of translations now says how many come back and when, and what still works, in amber instead of a red error.
Holding a line in a photo that has no AI translation shows its words as cards you can tap.
The drawing pad gives you a full-width square to write in, and the ✕ at the top closes it.
Drawing search recognises characters copied from on-screen or printed text much better.
Translate's error messages are shorter, with a Try again button.
The offline photo reader starts faster and no longer sends usage data from your phone.

Point your camera at Chinese text, or pick a photo, and tap any word in it to look it up, with AI explaining each line. On Android it reads the photo right on your phone, even offline.
Translate takes up to 2,000 characters and shows the result as it arrives.
If your Chinese has mistakes, Translate shows your sentence with them marked and the fix under it.
Every translation opens as its own page, and Recent keeps all of them.
Look up a character by drawing it in search.
Turn on Write in the Breakdown to get stroke boxes for every character you searched, then tap one to watch how it's written.
Words can be read by p8nda's natural voice or your phone's own Chinese voice, at the speed you choose.
The Breakdown keeps long words and names like 巴布亚新几内亚 together.
Audio no longer stops working after a long study session.
Tapping a word opens it faster.
A blocked or unreliable connection no longer signs you out.
In mainland China, the app no longer shows you as offline when p8nda is slow to answer on a working connection.
On Android, updates no longer leave a spare copy of the dictionary in your phone's storage, and the copies earlier versions left are cleared.
0.6.1 Live

Practice a round whenever you want, at any size, as many as you like. Nothing is due by the end of the day.
Daily review is now just Review.
Search and filter Your words, and stop reviewing any word without losing its progress.
History keeps your last 30 practice days. Replay a day, a round, or just the words you missed.
On a tablet, study pages open beside your decks.
Repeating a round no longer costs you progress.
The New Deck button in the deck picker works again on iPhone.
Search boxes no longer grow taller when you type Chinese.
0.6.0
16 Aug 2026 · Replaced by 0.6.1
Words you practice now come back right before you would forget them. Daily review deals you a small deck each day, sized and weighted however suits you; do it, then repeat it as often as you like
Pick an HSK level or a frequency list and learn a batch of new words every day. Thanks charost for asking for both of these!
Your schedule, your settings, and each day's deck sync across your devices and p8nda.com
The Flashcards tab has a new Study section for your daily loop, and Smart practice is retired now that Daily review finds weak words better
The app is a lot faster. Tabs switch almost instantly, Chinese search keeps up with your typing, and word, deck and review pages open in a fraction of the time they used to
Search no longer says "No results" while it is still looking, and words written with a hyphen like push-up or t-shirt now find the right entry

Mix directions in one session: some cards ask Chinese first, others English first
Choose how cards are ordered: deck order, shuffled, or your weakest words first
Choose what happens to a card you miss: it comes back soon, later, at the end, or not at all
Word and example audio can play as the card appears or the moment you flip. Thanks charost for the idea!
Pinyin can show on the front of the card, and example sentences can wait until you flip or stay off for good. Thanks charost for the report!
Stroke practice: write traditional characters, hear the word before you draw it, and see how many strokes you missed
Category practice lets you choose how many cards to study, like HSK and frequency already did
Fixed a blank practice screen on some saved sessions, and a sync bug that could drop words you had just added to a deck
