From Wenxi
闻喜 in Shanxi. As a Censor (
监察御史), he was one of the most vocal court officials backing the 1898 Hundred Days' Reform. After Empress Dowager Cixi's coup, he was beheaded at Caishikou in Beijing along with Tan Sitong (
谭嗣同), Liu Guangdi, Lin Xu, Yang Rui, and Kang Guangren — collectively the
戊戌六君子.
