Originally the wife of Emperor Xuanzong's own son, she was taken as imperial consort in 745. Her lavish court lifestyle and the political rise of her cousin 杨国忠 are traditionally blamed for triggering the An Lushan Rebellion 安史之乱, which ended the Tang golden age.

Bai Juyi's long poem 《长恨歌》 (Song of Everlasting Sorrow) immortalized her death as tragic romance. The idiom 闭月羞花 ('shames the moon, embarrasses the flowers') traditionally pairs her with 貂蝉.
