In 1898 Guangxu backed Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao in the '戊戌变法' (Hundred Days' Reform). Empress Dowager Cixi staged a coup after 103 days, executed six reformers, and put the emperor under house arrest at 瀛台 until his death in 1908 — one day before Cixi's own.

Modern forensic tests on his hair in 2008 confirmed lethal levels of arsenic, backing the long-standing suspicion that he was poisoned. The episode remains a staple of late-Qing TV dramas and a symbol of reform stifled by palace politics.
