In 1898 Guangxu backed Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao in the '' (Hundred Days' Reform). Empress Dowager Cixi staged a coup after 103 days, executed six reformers, and put the emperor under house arrest at until his death in 1908 — one day before Cixi's own.
