history

Qingdao was leased to the German Empire from 1898-1914, which built the red-tiled European old town, the railway, and the brewery that became Tsingtao (青岛啤酒) — still one of China's best-known exports. The older romanization 'Tsingtao' on the beer label preserves the pre-pinyin spelling.
