Ningbo's port —
宁波舟山港 — has been the world's busiest by cargo tonnage for over a decade. The name means "tranquil waves", given in 1381 by the Ming emperor
朱元璋. The city is the historical base of the
宁波帮 (Ningbo merchants), who dominated Shanghai finance and industry in the early 20th century.
