Foshan is the hometown of Wing Chun (咏春) and Hung Gar (洪拳). Folk hero 黄飞鸿 (Wong Fei-hung) trained here, and both 叶问 (Ip Man) and Bruce Lee (李小龙) trace their lineage to Foshan — the city leans on this heritage heavily for tourism.

In the Ming and Qing dynasties Foshan was one of China's 'Four Great Towns' (四大名镇), alongside Hankou, Zhuxian, and Jingdezhen, famed for ironware and ceramics (the Shiwan 石湾 kilns).
