The name
旧金山 reflects the city's early history as a major destination during the California Gold Rush. It was known as 'Gold Mountain' (
金山, Jīnshān) by Chinese immigrants even before the 'old' (
旧, jiù) was added to differentiate it from other 'Gold Mountains' like Australia.
