culture
鼓浪屿, the tiny car-free island off Xiamen, is a UNESCO World Heritage site packed with 19th-century colonial villas — a legacy of its treaty-port years as Amoy. Locally the city is called Amoy /E-moi/ in Hokkien, the origin of the old romanization.
memory
厦 means 'mansion' and 门 means 'gate' — Xiamen is literally the 'Gateway of Mansions', a fitting name for a prosperous coastal trade port.
