魏征's team presented its annals and biographies in 636. Its ten treatises, on law, the economy, astronomy, music and more, were added in 656 and cover the Liang, Chen, Northern Qi and Northern Zhou as well as the Sui.

Its treatise on books, the 经籍志, was the first official catalogue to sort all writing into the four divisions 经, 史, 子 and 集, the scheme the 四库全书 still followed over a thousand years later.
