Tips

history
Compiled in 646–648 by a team under the chief minister 房玄龄, it covers the Western and Eastern Jin (265–420) and, in a section of its own, the rulers of the Sixteen Kingdoms in the north. Emperor 唐太宗 wrote four of its verdicts himself, among them those on 司马懿 and the calligrapher 王羲之. It is the fifth of the 二十四史.
culture
Two chengyu from it come from the same battle, the rout of the northern ruler 苻坚 at the Fei River in 383: 草木皆兵 'every bush and tree looks like a soldier' and 风声鹤唳 'every gust of wind and cry of a crane sounds like the enemy'.
