Kangxi and Qianlong often spent several summer months at the Mountain Resort, running the government from there.
Tips
history
Begun in 1703 under the Kangxi Emperor and finished under Qianlong, the resort was where the court spent its summers and received Mongol and Tibetan leaders. In 1860, as British and French troops took Beijing, the Xianfeng Emperor fled here, and he died here the next year. It was also called the Rehe Palace (热河行宫).
culture
With the Eight Outer Temples (外八庙) around it, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. As ordinary words, 避暑 is 'to escape the summer heat' and 山庄 'a mountain villa'.
