Tips

culture
Its definition of a teacher is still quoted on Teachers' Day: 师者,所以传道受业解惑也 'a teacher is one who passes on the Way, imparts learning and resolves doubts.' The original writes 受 in its old sense 'to impart', which modern quotations usually change to 授.
history
韩愈 wrote it around 802 for a young student, at a time when educated men thought it shameful to take a teacher. Its claim that 弟子不必不如师 'a student need not be inferior to the teacher' was bold for its day.
