Simplified from traditional 師 (a left mound + right 帀 'army banner', picturing troops gathered under a standard, hence 'commander, master'). The 1956 reform compressed the left side to a 2-stroke residue with no independent identity. Indexed under Kangxi #50 巾 (cloth) — the surviving piece of the old banner sits at bottom-right.
