金山 is the standard Chinese rendering of 'San Francisco' as 旧金山 (jiùjīnshān, 'Old Gold Mountain') — a name from the 1849 Gold Rush, when Chinese laborers called California 金山. After Australian gold strikes the term was reused for Melbourne (新金山 'New Gold Mountain'), and 旧金山 stuck for SF.
