Tips

history
First a late-spring scene of petals carried off by a stream, as in 李煜's 流水落花春去也, 'flowing water, fallen blossoms, spring is gone'. Scattered petals came to stand for a scattered army, and today the phrase almost always comes after 打得, 'beaten until...'.
