From Liu Zongyuan's (
柳宗元, Tang dynasty)
《江雪》:
千山鸟飞绝,
万径人踪灭。
孤舟蓑笠翁,
独钓寒江雪 - 'A thousand mountains: birds in flight, gone. Ten thousand paths: human tracks, erased. A lone boat, a straw-cloaked, bamboo-hatted old man - alone, fishing the snow of the cold river.' Written during Liu's exile, the sparest twenty characters in the Tang canon.
