Han Yu (韩愈) was sent here as prefect in 819 after protesting against the emperor's welcome of a Buddha relic. In eight months he freed bondservants, set up schools and, the story goes, drove the crocodiles out of the river.
usage
The English name Teochew imitates the local pronunciation, and it covers the whole region's 潮州菜 (Teochew cuisine) and 潮州话 (the Teochew language), which large communities in Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia still speak.
