Shantou is the centre of the Chaoshan region (潮汕), with its own Min language and a famous food scene. Many Chinese families in Thailand and elsewhere in Southeast Asia trace their roots here, and 李嘉诚, born in nearby Chaozhou, founded Shantou University in 1981.
