韩愈 used it in 柳子厚墓志铭 of his friend 柳宗元 in debate, arguing with such dash that he outtalked everyone present. Today it is formal praise for high spirits. 踔 is read chuō. The newer 踔厉奋发 'to strive with vigor' is common in formal speeches.
