usage
A literary character. The most common compound is 踔厉 ('spirited and vigorous'), seen in formal phrases like 踔厉风发 ('full of dash and vigor'). Mainland reading is chuō; Taiwan reads it zhuó.
Foot radical on the left, in its compressed side-form of 足. It marks an action of the legs and feet — here, leaping and striding. Same family as 跳 to jump, 跑 to run, 踢 to kick.
Right side 卓 gives the sound (zhuó → chuō) and reinforces the 'tall, outstanding' sense behind the meaning 'to surpass.' Same phonetic in 桌 table and 罩 cover.
