Yichang is the gateway to the Three Gorges (三峡) and home to the Three Gorges Dam - the world's largest hydroelectric power station. River cruises between Yichang and Chongqing are a classic Yangtze tourism route.
history
The ancient name for the area was 夷陵 (Yílíng) - the 222 CE Battle of Yiling here crushed Liu Bei's Shu forces and is dramatized in 三国演义.
