Coastal prefecture-level city in Shandong, once a Qing signal-fire station —
烟台 literally means "smoke platform", after the beacon towers warning of Japanese pirates. Home of Changyu (
张裕), China's oldest and largest winery, founded 1892. Also famous for its apples (
烟台苹果) and as a summer resort (Penglai
蓬莱, of "Eight Immortals crossing the sea" fame, lies within the city).
