Renamed from 徽州 (Huizhou) to Huangshan in 1987 to capitalise on the tourism pull of the UNESCO-listed mountain, a controversial move still debated today, since Huizhou is the cradle of Huizhou culture (徽文化): the Hui merchants, 徽派建筑 whitewashed-wall architecture, Huizhou cuisine, and the Xin'an school of painting. The city still contains the ancient Huizhou walled city.
mistakes
黄山市 (the city) is not the same as 黄山 (the mountain). Most tourists fly into Huangshan City (Tunxi 屯溪 airport) and then travel 60 km to the mountain itself.
