history
Work began in 1994 at Sandouping near 宜昌; the dam was finished in 2006 and the whole project in 2012. Its reservoir reaches about 600 km up the Yangtze and drowned towns, farmland and old sites along the gorges.
usage
The whole scheme, with its locks and power plant, is the 三峡工程; 三峡大坝 is the dam itself.
