Yichang used to be called Yiling; it was here in the Three Kingdoms period that Lu Xun defeated Liu Bei.

Known as the gateway to the Three Gorges (三峡), the city has two great dams: 葛洲坝 in town and the Three Gorges Dam upstream. Boats through the gorges to Chongqing set out from here. The official name is 宜昌市.
