In 196 CE, Cao Cao (曹操) moved the puppet Han emperor Xian (汉献帝) here and renamed the city 许都 ('Xu capital'); the Wei emperor Cao Pi later renamed it 许昌 ('Xu prospers'). It remains a major Three Kingdoms tourism site in Henan.

Modern Xuchang is nicknamed 'China's wig capital' (假发之都) - it is the world's largest producer of human-hair wigs and hairpieces.
