history
Nanchang is known as 英雄城 ("Heroic City") because of the 南昌起义 (Nanchang Uprising) on August 1, 1927 — the CCP's first armed uprising against the KMT, led by 周恩来, 朱德, 贺龙, 叶挺 and 刘伯承. That date is now the PLA's founding day (八一建军节).
