Harbin was shaped by Russian engineers building the Chinese Eastern Railway from 1898 onward, and later by tens of thousands of White Russian émigrés fleeing the 1917 revolution. The legacy is visible in 索菲亚教堂 (St. Sophia Cathedral), Russian-style bakery chain 秋林 (Churin), and the city's iconic bread 大列巴.
