Tips

history
It was compiled under 李昉 on the orders of Emperor Taizong of Song, in the same years as the 太平御览, and named after the Taiping Xingguo era (976–984). Its 500 scrolls gather stories from about 475 earlier books, sorted by subject: immortals, ghosts, fox spirits, dreams, retribution. Many of those books are otherwise lost.
culture
Later writers mined it constantly: Yuan, Ming and Qing plays and novels took many plots from it, and it is the source cited for idioms such as 为虎作伥 'to help a villain do evil'.
