Tips

history
李昉 and a team of scholars compiled it from 977 to 983 on the orders of 宋太宗. First called 太平总类, it was renamed after the emperor read it through, three scrolls a day: 御览 means 'read by the emperor'. It quotes some 1,690 earlier works, most of them now lost, which makes it a key source for texts that no longer survive.
culture
When courtiers worried that the emperor was wearing himself out, he answered that opening a book always does some good, the origin of the idiom 开卷有益.
