Originates from Han Yu's Tang-dynasty essay 《柳子厚墓志铭》: 议论证据今古，出入经史百子，踔厉风发 describing Liu Zongyuan's sharp debating mind. It returned to wide use after a 2022 political report, after which it spread through state media. Named a 2022 Top 10 buzzword by 《咬文嚼字》.
