Written by
王实甫 in the Yuan dynasty as a zaju play in five parts, it retells the Tang story of
崔莺莺, a chief minister's daughter, and the poor scholar
张生, who fall in love at a temple and, helped by her maid
红娘, overcome her mother's opposition. It builds on an earlier Jin-dynasty ballad version of the story.
