Traced to the closing wish of 王实甫's Yuan-dynasty play 《西厢记》 "Romance of the Western Chamber": 愿普天下有情的都成了眷属 "may all lovers under heaven become husband and wife". 眷属 means a married couple here. A favorite line for weddings and happy endings.
