usage
生 here means "young scholar", as in 书生, so 张生 is "the scholar Zhang". In the play his name is 张珙, courtesy name 君瑞. Other old stories have their own scholar Zhang, as in the Yuan play 《张生煮海》 "Zhang Sheng Boils the Sea".
