Originally a manga by Abe Yaro (
安倍夜郎) serialized from 2006. The Japanese live-action adaptation began in 2009 on MBS/TBS, with multiple Netflix-era sequels (Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories). Each episode features a late-night Shinjuku izakaya master and a different customer whose order unlocks a small life story. A 2017 Mainland Chinese remake starring Huang Lei (
黄磊) was panned as awkwardly transplanted and is a cautionary reference in discussions of cross-cultural adaptations.
