汽 (steam, gas - same character as in 汽水 "soda" / 汽车 "car-with-engine") + 酒 (alcohol). Literally a "gassy alcohol," i.e. a fizzy wine. Distinct from 香槟 (champagne specifically): 汽酒 covers any carbonated wine, often a cheaper fruit version.
