history
子子孙孙 comes from the 《尚书·梓材》(Shàngshū·Zǐcái) line 子子孙孙永保民 (zǐzǐ sūnsūn yǒng bǎo mín, 'may sons and grandsons forever protect the people'). The doubled-character form intensifies the sense of an unbroken chain stretching into the indefinite future.

Note the AABB pattern: 子子孙孙. This reduplication is common in classical-flavored four-character expressions to suggest 'on and on' — compare 世世代代 (shì shì dài dài, generation after generation), 家家户户 (jiā jiā hù hù, every household).
