鬼 (ghosts of the dead) and
神 (gods/divine spirits) form a paired category for the supernatural. The chengyu
鬼神莫测 (guǐshén mò cè) - 'even ghosts and gods cannot fathom it' - describes something incredibly mysterious or skillful.
