Legend says the sage-king Shun had his 韶 music played on the mountain here, hence the name. Mao came back in 1959 and wrote 到韶山 'Arriving at Shaoshan', with the line 为有牺牲多壮志 'it was sacrifice that strengthened our resolve'.

It is the best-known destination of 'red tourism' (红色旅游), trips to the sites of the revolution.
