Shaoguan's Danxia Mountain is a World Natural Heritage site.
Tips
history
Shaoguan's 南华寺 (Nanhua Temple) is one of Chan (Zen) Buddhism's most sacred sites — it is where the illiterate-woodcutter-turned-patriarch 六祖慧能 (Huineng, 638-713) taught, and his mummified body is still on display there today.
culture
Shaoguan contains 丹霞山 (Mount Danxia), the type site for the "Danxia landform" — red sandstone cliffs carved into pillars and domes — inscribed as UNESCO World Natural Heritage in 2010.
