平顶山 ('flat-topped mountain') is a resource-based city built around one of China's largest coalfields, developed from the 1950s onward. Sights outside the urban core include 中原大佛 - at 208 m, one of the tallest statues in the world - and 尧山 scenic area. The city is also sometimes written 鹰城 ('Eagle City') after a local totem.

The name is literal: 平 (flat) + 顶 (top) + 山 (mountain) - a mesa-like ridge gave the city its name.
