history
Traced to Su Zhe's Song poem 《寄范文景仁》: 明窗净几舒华茵 — 'bright window, clean table, unfurling a fine mat.' The poetic collocation settled into today's fixed form with 窗 and 几 first.
mistakes
几 here is jī, meaning a small low table/desk — NOT jǐ ('how many'). Mispronouncing it as jǐ is a classic error. The traditional form 几 stays the same in simplified; the writing doesn't change, only the reading.
