From the 1990s Taiwanese manufacturers (台商) built so many factories here that Kunshan became one of the richest county-level cities in China. It shares the hairy-crab lake 阳澄湖 with Suzhou.

In classical texts 昆山 can also mean the Kunlun Mountains (昆仑山), the legendary source of fine jade, as in 昆山片玉 'a piece of jade from Mount Kun', a rare talent.
