Kunming sits at ~1,900 m elevation on a plateau beside Dian Lake (滇池) and enjoys the mildest year-round climate of any major Chinese city — hence the nickname 春城 (Chūnchéng, 'Spring City'). It is the gateway to Yunnan's diverse ethnic-minority areas (Lijiang, Dali, Xishuangbanna) and the historic Burma Road.
