From the Zhou dynasty, 太师 was the senior of the 三公 (Three Dukes), alongside 太傅 and 太保. By Ming–Qing times it was largely an honorary title granted to high officials. 《封神演义》's 闻太师 Wen Zhong is the most famous fictional bearer.
