Tips

history
Written by 赵晔 in the Eastern Han, it tells the feud between Wu and Yue at the end of the Spring and Autumn period: 伍子胥's flight and revenge, King 夫差's victory, and 勾践's years of humiliation and final triumph. It mixes history with legend and reads almost like a novel. Ten of its twelve juan survive.
culture
同病相怜 'fellow sufferers pity each other' comes from it. 伍子胥, a refugee from Chu whose family had been killed there, explains why he helps another refugee from Chu by quoting a song: 同病相怜,同忧相救 'those with the same illness pity each other, those with the same grief help each other'.
