About Jimi Hendrix

1942–1970 · 音乐家 musician

American rock guitarist who changed how the electric guitar is played, with feedback and distortion; his 1969 Woodstock performance of the US national anthem is famous. He died in London at 27.

Chinese fans call him 吉他之神, 'god of the guitar'. Taiwan writes his name 罕醉克斯, whose first two characters, 罕 and 醉, happen to read 'rarely drunk'.

Five syllables: 亨 + 德 + 里 + 克 + 斯 sounds out 'Heng-de-li-ke-si' → Hendrix. The 克斯 ending is the standard Mandarin rendering for English '-x' (马克思 Marx, 菲利克斯 Felix).
